Is Doc Based On A True Story?

Yes! Doc is loosely based on Italian doctor Pierdante Piccioni. After the accident, Pierdante Piccioni suffered a brain injury on May 31, 2013. He later awoke from his coma after so many years, believing it was Oct 25, 2001. But he was surprised when he saw his adult kids.

“They weren’t my guys. I expected to see two children, 8 and 11, and these adults (aged 20 and 23) came to me,” Piccioni told PEOPLE. “I had two cheerful children and these others came in saying, ‘Hi Papa’ and I was like ‘Who are you?’ ”

To understand who he was, Piccioni read over 65,000 emails he’d either sent or received. He learned he seemed “cold” in his chats with others. So, he saw it as a chance to be kinder.

Piccioni said the brain damage caused, “a change of character, a change of personality, a change of way of life.”

He hasn’t recovered from the 12 years of lost memories. He admitted that watching his life on TV was emotional. It opened some old wounds. Still, Piccioni continues to focus on the silver lining.

Doc tells the story of Dr. Amy Larsen. She is the chief of internal and family medicine at Westside Hospital in Minneapolis. A horrific car accident causes a brain injury. After a brief coma, doctors find Amy has partial retrograde amnesia. She has no memory of the past eight years.
