Magnus Carlsen was born on November 30, 1990, in Tonsberg, Norway. His father introduced him to chess when he was 5, and at 8 he participated in his first Norwegian Chess Championship. Considered the “Mozart of Chess,” he was a Grandmaster at 13, and in 2004 his reign began.

At 15, he was Norway’s champion and the youngest player ever to qualify for the Candidates Tournament.

At 18 he crossed the elite 2800 rating, and at 19 became the youngest-ever world No. 1. He won his first FIDE World Championship in 2013 by defeating Viswanathan Anand.

Carlsen has won five World Championships, five World Rapid titles , and seven World Blitz titles, holding all three simultaneously in 2014, 2019, and 2022.

He was also the winner of the 2023 Chess World Cup and has held the title of world’s No. 1 since 2011, with the longest reign in history. His highest rating, 2882, is still the highest ever.
