Usha Mehta was a professor and activist. She is famous for her secret radio station which she started during the Quit India Moment in 1942.
Usha Mehta answered the clarion call made by Mahatma Gandhi on the 8th of August 1942 when he launched the Quit India movement and urged everyone to either live and fight or die.
Along with other activists, Mehta, who at that time was only 22, managed to acquire a ‘ghost’ transmitter and started an ‘encounter for Gandhi’ a radio station that helped broadcast Gandhiji’s message.

Usha Mehta Background, Education, And Career
Usha Mehta was born in Saras village in Gujarat on 25 March 1920. Usha did her early education at Kheda and Bharuch School and later shifted to Bombay for her higher education. Usha did PhD in Gandhian at Bombay University, where she also taught political science and ran the whole politics department.
She also served at Wilson College where she was able to teach for 30 years. She was president of the Gandhi Peace Foundation and in 1998 was awarded one of the highest civilian awards of India, the Padma Vibhushan.

Mehta never married or had children. She spent her whole life working for the welfare of people. She died on 11th August 2000. She was 80 years old when she died.

In the loving memory of Usha Mehta, a movie named “Ae Watan Mere Watan” was dedicated. The movie starring Sara Ali Khan as Usha Mehta, was released on 21st March, 2024.
